Robert R. Bahnson, MD

Robert R. Bahnson, MD was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. His term extends from February 2008  - February 2014.

 

Dr. Bahnson, a native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is a graduate of Carleton College and Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his urology residency at Northwestern. He has held faculty positions in urologic surgery at Washington University, The University of Pittsburgh, and Ohio State where he currently occupies The Dave Longaberger Endowed Chair in Urology and serves as the Chairman of the Department of Urology.

 

Dr. Bahnson has received an American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Career Development Award, an AFUD Research Scholarship, and a Clinical Investigator Award from NIH/NCI to support his research.

 

He has been on the Board of Directors of the Northeastern Section and the Northcentral Section of the AUA. He is a past president of The Ohio Urologic Society and The Society of University Urologists. He has served on the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Urology and currently chairs the Urology Advisory Council for the American College of Surgeons.

 

Dr. Bahnson and his wife Janet have four children; Eimear, Eamonn, Emmett, and Eoghan. He is passionate about golf and was recently named to Golf Digests Top 250 golfing doctors.

 

 
David A. Bloom, MD Top of Page ^
Dr. Bloom was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Urology. His term extends from February 2002 – February 2008.

A widely-recognized authority in the field of pediatric urology, Dr. David A. Bloom has a solid record of clinical and service contributions. He is currently chair of the Department of Urology, has served as chief of pediatric urology in the Department of Surgery from 1984-2001, was a member of the Medical School Admissions Committee for 15 years, and twice has served on the Executive Committee on Clinical Affairs at the University of Michigan.

In 1984, Dr. Bloom joined the University of Michigan faculty as assistant professor of surgery and chief of pediatric urology. In 1986, he was promoted to associate professor of surgery and achieved his present rank of professor of surgery in 1993.  In 2001, he became professor of urology when the Section of Urology in the Department of Surgery became the Department of Urology. In 2002, he received the Jack Lapides endowed professorship in urology.  Dr. Bloom served as associate dean for faculty from 2000-2007.  In March 2007 he became chair of the UM Department of Urology.

Dr. Bloom’s clinical and scholarly interests include genitourinary reconstruction, lower urinary tract dysfunction, genital anomalies, neurogenic bladder, laparoscopy, and medical history. During his time at Michigan, he has published more than 150 papers and 60 book chapters, and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Pediatric Urology, British Journal of Urology, Urology, Contemporary Urology, and the Journal of Endourology, and has been a consultant for Stedman’s Medical Dictionary since 1992.

Dr. Bloom earned his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1971. After serving an internship in surgery at UCLA, he completed residencies in general surgery and urology, both at UCLA, in addition to a fellowship in pediatric urology at the Institute of Urology of the University of London. In 1980, Dr. Bloom was appointed assistant professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, and staff urologist at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He was promoted to associate professor of surgery and named chief of pediatric urology at Walter Reed in 1983.

Dr. Bloom has memberships and has held offices in 26 professional societies, including chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Urology, historian for the Society for Pediatric Urology, and secretary-treasurer for the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons.  He also is a trustee of the American Board of Urology, a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Dr. Bloom is certified to practice in the States of Michigan, California, and New York.  He is a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners, American Board of Surgery, and American Board of Urology (recertification thru 2017).

Dr. Boone was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American Academy of Genitourinary Surgeons. His term extends from February 2006 – February 2012.

Timothy B. Boone, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chairman, Scott Department of Urology, Baylor College of Medicine, was born in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas with a B.S. in Biology, earned his Master of Science degree in physiology, and his Ph.D. in neuroscience at the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, completed his residency training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and joined the faculty at Southwestern in 1991. Dr. Boone was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1995 and recertified in 2003.

In 1992, he came to Baylor College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor. He is the Medical Director of the Urodynamic Laboratories at The Methodist Hospital and has received a secondary appointment to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine.  As a member of The Center for Prostheses Infection, he represents the specialty of Urology and he is the staff urologist over the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at the Houston VA Medical Center.

Dr. Boone specializes in treatment of patients with incontinence and bladder problems associated with spinal cord injury and neurologic disease, men with postprostatectomy incontinence, and women with complex voiding dysfunction. He has established an active Neurourology Research Laboratory focused on the basic mechanisms of bladder dysfunction following neurologic injury to better treat these conditions.

Dr. Boone is a member of the Texas Urological Society, Society for Neuroscience, American Urological Association, Inc., the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons and Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU). Dr. Boone was recently elected to membership in the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons.

He serves as a consultant reviewer for several scientific journals, including Neurourology and Urodynamics, where he is the clinical neurourology editor, The Journal of Urology, Urology, Spinal Cord, European Urology and the New England Journal of Medicine.

 
Ralph V. Clayman, MD Top of Page ^

Dr. Clayman was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the Society of University Urologists. His term extends from February 2005 – February 2011.

Dr. Clayman is a graduate of Grinnell College and the University of California - San Diego, School of Medicine.  He obtained his general surgery and urology training at the University of Minnesota and then proceeded to spend two years at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas pursuing his interests in renal cancer research, kidney stone disease, and minimally invasive urology. Dr. Clayman was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1981 and recertified in 2006.

 In 1984 he accepted a position at Washington University in St. Louis. Over the ensuing 17 years, he rose to the rank of Professor of Urology and Radiology as well as Director of the Midwest Stone Institute, and Co-Director of the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery. 

In January 2002, he accepted the Chair of the newly formed Department of Urology at the University of California - Irvine.  He is a co-founder of the Endourology Society for which he serves as Secretary General; he is also co-founder and editor of the Journal of Endourology.

His areas of clinical concentration include all aspects of endoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery of the kidney and ureter.  His nonclinical research is focused on tissue bioengineering and instrumentation for minimally invasive surgery.

 
John B. Forrest, MD Top of Page ^

Dr. Forrest was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American Association of Clinical Urologists. His term extends from February 2007 – February 2013. 

Dr. Forrest is a board certified urologist with the Urologic Specialists of Oklahoma, Inc., a sixteen man urologic group in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Dr. Forrest received his B.A. from the University of Tulsa in l972 and his M.D. from the University of Oklahoma in l976.  This was followed by a residency in general surgery and urology at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Forrest then performed a Fellowship in Urologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Dr. Forrest is a Clinical Associate Professor of Urology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Tulsa. He is past Chief of Staff of St. John Medical Center in Tulsa and a past member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Tulsa.  Dr. Forrest is Vice-Chairman of the Practice Guidelines Committee of the American Urological Association and a member of the ad-hoc Pay for Performance and Core Curriculum Committees of the AUA.  He is also Treasurer of the South Central Section of the AUA. 

Dr. Forrest was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1984, and in keeping with ABU policy with respect to grandfathered Trustees, will be required to recertify during his board tenure.

 
Gerald H. Jordan, MD, FACS, FAAP Top of Page ^

Dr. Jordan was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American College of Surgeons. His term extends from February 2006 – February 2012. 

The urologic practice of Dr. Jordan is limited almost exclusively to adult and pediatric genitourinary reconstructive surgery.  Dr. Jordan graduated from the United States Naval Academy after which he did pre-med training at U.S. International University Cal Western Campus.  He received his medical degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio.  He was a Designated Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force, completed his internship and urological residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, and a fellowship in pediatric and adult reconstructive surgery at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine.  Dr. Jordan is currently a Professor in the Urology Department of the Eastern Virginia Medical School and is Chairman of the Devine Center for Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.

Dr. Jordan was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1984 and is recertified through 2018. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He has wide and varied academic interests and is an innovative leader in the field of genitourinary reconstructive surgery.  He is keenly motivated in this area of investigation and has made notable contributions to the literature.  He also participates in numerous national and international medical conferences and serves as a visiting professor at many centers throughout the world.

 
Michael O. Koch, MD Top of Page ^

Dr. Koch was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American Urological Association. His term extends from February 2004 – February 2010.  He is currently Secretary-Treasurer of the ABU, and will serve as President from February 2009 – February 2010.

Dr. Koch has been Chairman and Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine since 1998. He completed his urology residency at Vanderbilt and has been in continuous clinical practice since 1987. Dr. Koch was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1989. He is recertified through 2019.

Dr. Koch practices general urology but focuses on urologic cancer. He has a long term interest in urinary reconstruction, prostate cancer and bladder cancer. He sees over 2,000 outpatients, performs over 200 prostatectomies, and performs over 50 radical 4 cystectomies every year.

He has been chairman of the ABU-AUA Joint Examination Committee, president of the Society of University Chairpersons, and president of the Society of University Urologists. He currently serves as vice-chairman of the Residency Review Committee for Urology.

 
Barry A. Kogan, MD Top of Page ^

Dr. Kogan was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American Urological Association. His term extends from February 2007 – February 2013. 

Dr. Kogan is the Chief, Division of Urology, Albany Medical College.  He went to Medical School at Northwestern University and did his residency at the University of Michigan.  After a fellowship in Pediatric Urology in Liverpool, England, he joined the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco where he was promoted from Assistant Professor to Professor of Urology and Pediatrics over 15 years.  In 1997, he became the Chief of the Division of Urology in Albany.  In 2004, he led a transition of the Urology clinical practice to become a part of the multispecialty group, Community Care Physicians, all the while maintaining the faculty’s full-time appointments and obligations. 

Dr. Kogan continues to have an active clinical practice in Pediatric Urology, with a wide range of primary to tertiary care cases. He is a well recognized educator, having been awarded a “Silver Scalpel” award as the best surgical teacher.  He has also led a strengthening of the residency program in Urology, which was awarded a 5 year accreditation with a note of commendation from the Residency Review Committee.  Dr. Kogan is also an active investigator with experience in NIH-funded basic research, investigator-initiated clinical research, and industry-sponsored clinical trials.  He has published extensively in many areas of pediatric urology and investigative urology.  In addition, he has contributed to many local, national and international organizations as lecturer, committee member and Chair. 

Dr. Kogan is currently a Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the Albany Medical College and Chief of the Division of Urology.  He holds the Falk Chair in Urology at the Albany Medical College.  Dr. Kogan was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1983 and will enter maintenance of certification upon earning his subspecialty certification in pediatric urology.

 
Paul H. Lange, MD Top of Page ^

Dr. Lange was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American Academy of Genitourinary Surgeons. His term extends from February 2004 – February 2010.

Dr. Lange is Professor of the Department of Urology at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington where he served as its Chairman for 19 years.  He received his B.A. from Lawrence College, and his M.D. from Washington University Medical School.  After medical school he trained at the National Institute of Health, Duke University, and the University of Minnesota. 

Dr. Lange was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1978 and recertified in 2006.  He has served on many editorial boards, including the New England Journal of Medicine.  He is a member of numerous professional and honorary societies, and most notably served as president of the Society of Urologic Oncology. 

Dr. Lange is internationally recognized for his clinical and experimental work in a variety of genitourinary cancers especially prostate and testis and has received national recognition for this work.  Currently, in addition to conducting a substantial clinical practice in urologic oncology, and doing research in prostate cancer, he is director of the Institute for Prostate Cancer Research, a multi-disciplinary research initiative of the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

 
Margaret   S.  Pearle, MD, PHD Top of Page ^

Dr. Pearle was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American Urological Association. Her term extends from February 2008 – February 2014.

 

Dr. Pearle attended the University of Chicago where she received her B.A. in Biology and M.S. in Biochemistry.  She continued on at the University of Chicago for medical school in the Medical Scientist Training Program, receiving her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in 1985 and 1987, respectively.  She completed her Urology residency at Northwestern University, then went on to fellowship training in Endourology and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Washington University, St. Louis, under the direction of Dr. Ralph Clayman.

 

Dr. Pearle is currently Professor of Urology with joint appointments in the Departments of Urology and Mineral Metabolism and holder of the Ralph C. Smith Distinguished Chair in Urologic Education at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Her research interests include evaluation of dietary and medical therapies for kidney stone prevention, assessment of outcomes for minimally invasive surgical treatments, development and assessment of resident teaching tools and cost analysis of treatment strategies.  In her clinical practice, she primarily sees patients needing medical and/or surgical treatment for kidney stones. 

 

In 2003, Dr. Pearle received the Gold Cystoscope award from the American Urological Association, and is an active member of the esteemed American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons.  She is a past President of the R.O.C.K. Society and served as a member and subsequently consultant for the AUA/ABU Joint Examination Committee.  In addition, she serves on the Editorial Boards of several peer-reviewed journals. 

 
William D. Steers, MD, FACS Top of Page ^

Dr. Steers was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American Urological Association. His term extends from February 2005 – February 2011.  He will serve as President of the ABU from February 2010 – February 2011.

Dr. Steers received his medical degree in 1980 from the Medical College of Ohio after receiving a degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University. After a residency at the University of Texas and M.D. Anderson Hospital, Dr Steers completed a fellowship in Neurobiology and Pharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh. He has been at the University of Virginia since 1988 and became Chair of the Department of Urology in 1995, where he is the Hovey Dabney Professor of Urology.  Dr. Steers was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1990 and recertified in 1998.

His numerous academic honors include annual listing in America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America, and he is the recipient of the AUA Gold Cystoscope and the Dornier Innovative Research Award.

 Dr. Steers’ clinical interests span from urinary incontinence, BPH, and neurogenic bladder, to robotic surgery and pharmacology of the genitourinary tract. He has a busy clinical practice, seeing outpatients two days a week and performing surgery 1 ½ days per week.

Dr Steers is a member of the FDA’s Reproductive Medicine Advisory Panel and currently chairs the NIH Urinary Incontinence Clinical Trials group.  Dr Steers has participated in over 20 clinical trials on drugs for incontinence. His basic research focuses on the etiology of overactive bladder and urge incontinence especially plasticity in afferents, animal models and risk factors.

He serves as an editorial consultant and reviewer for over 40 journals, sits on the editorial board of 7 journals and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Urology. Dr Steers is President of the University of Virginia physician’s practice plan, is a board member of Piedmont Liability Trust. He runs Three Notched Vineyard in Albemarle County, Virginia, with his wife Amy.

 
W. Bedford Waters, MD, FACS Top of Page ^

Dr. Waters was nominated to be a Trustee of the American Board of Urology by the American College of Surgeons. His term extends from February 2003 – February 2009.  He will serve as President of the ABU from February 2008 – February 2009.

Dr. Waters was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. He received an undergraduate degree in chemistry/pre-medical from Vanderbilt University in 1970 and a medical degree from that same institution in 1974.  He completed his internship and one year residency in general surgery at the University of California, San Diego 1974-1976, followed by urologic training at the Harvard Program in Urology (Longwood Area) in Boston, Massachusetts 1976-1980.  After residency, Dr. Waters became an assistant professor of surgery (urology) at the University of Illinois in Chicago, IL.  One year later, he jointed the faculty at Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine, where he remained for twenty years. He received his initial ABU certification in 1982 and was recertified in 2005.  He was promoted to associate professor in 1985 and professor in 1994.  Before leaving Loyola in June 2001, Dr. Waters served as Associate Director of the Department of Urology. 

In July 2001, Dr. Waters returned to Knoxville, where he is a professor in the Division of Urology at the University of Tennessee and a practicing urologists and partner of University Urology, P.C.  Dr. Waters has extensive experience in the treatment of urologic cancers.  He has presented his work widely and is the author of over fifty manuscripts and thirteen book chapters in the literature. 

Dr. Waters has served as a leader of many regional and national organizations, including President of the Chicago Urological Society (1995), President of the Illinois State Urological Society (2000), President of the Urology Section of the National Medical Association (1996-1998), while also serving on the Executive Committees of the Society of Urologic Oncology and the Society of University Urologists.  He served as a member of the ABU-AUA Joint Examination Committee (1995-1999).  

Dr. Waters is involved in the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, promoting early prostate cancer detection in the African-American community.  He was recognized as one of 25 African Americans “Making It Happen” in Knoxville during African-American History Month February 1, 2005.
